5 Things I wish I knew before going to Japan with kids

Japan has always been one of those dream destinations — clean, efficient, safe, and endlessly fascinating.
But traveling there with kids? That’s a whole different adventure!

After our first family trip to Japan, I realized there were so many little things no one really tells you — the kind of tips that can save you time, energy, and sanity when exploring this beautiful country with little ones.

So here are 5 things I wish I knew before traveling to Japan with kids — practical, honest advice from one parent traveler to another.

1. Choose Haneda Over Narita — It Makes a Big Difference

If you have the option, fly into Haneda Airport instead of Narita. Haneda is much closer to central Tokyo, which means less time hauling sleepy kids and heavy luggage through subways or trains after a long flight.

From Haneda, you can reach the city in about 20–30 minutes, versus over an hour (or more) from Narita. It’s one of those small choices that make the first day of your trip feel so much easier.

2. Get Familiar With Japan’s Subway System Before You Go

Japan’s train system is legendary — clean, efficient, and almost always on time. But for first-timers, it can feel like a maze!

Before you go, download a transit app like Japan Travel by Navitime or Google Maps. Both show routes, platforms, and ticket prices in English. Also, get an IC card (Suica or Pasmo) for easy tap-and-go travel — no fumbling with coins or paper tickets.,

However, since we were only staying in Tokyo for five nights, we decided not to get the Suica card. Instead, we booked the Greater Tokyo Pass through Klook and also used the Tokyo Subway 72-Hour Ticket. It turned out to be much cheaper and super convenient for unlimited rides on most Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines.

It’s worth checking which option makes sense for your itinerary — both are great, but the Klook passes can save you money if you plan your travel days strategically.

👉 Pro Tip: Teach your kids how to stay close on platforms and board quickly — the trains don’t wait!

3. Prepare for Lots of Walking

Between temple visits, station transfers, and exploring neighborhoods, you’ll easily hit 15,000 steps a day in Japan. Streets are clean and stroller-friendly, but sometimes narrow or hilly.

Make sure everyone has comfortable shoes and plan breaks — a park stop, a konbini (convenience store) snack break, or even just a vending machine drink moment. It helps keep the day fun for kids and parents.

4. Don’t Expect Trash Cans Everywhere

One of the biggest surprises? Japan’s streets are spotless… yet there are almost no public trash cans!

Bring a small reusable bag for your family’s garbage during the day. You’ll usually find bins in train stations, convenience stores, or near vending machines — but not on every corner.

It’s a small adjustment, but it makes a big difference when you’re traveling with kids and snack wrappers start piling up.

5. Book Popular Attractions in Advance

If you’re dreaming of visiting places like the Tokyo Disneyland, or TeamLab Planets, make sure to book tickets weeks ahead. These attractions often sell out fast — especially during school breaks or weekends.

Plan your “must-do” spots early so you don’t have to disappoint excited little travelers later!

Bonus Tip: Expect Lines (and Enjoy Them!)

It’s totally normal to line up for good food in Japan — even casual ramen shops. Locals are patient, and the wait is almost always worth it.
Try going during off-hours (like 4–6 PM), or pack a few small snacks to keep kids happy while waiting.

Final Thoughts

Traveling Japan with kids is magical — a mix of ancient culture, incredible food, and the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.
Yes, it requires a bit of planning and patience, but the memories you’ll make are absolutely worth it.

So if Japan is on your family’s bucket list, use these tips to make your trip smoother, easier, and even more enjoyable.
