Long Distance Travel With Kids
It’s been a long time since I’ve taken a 15+ hour flight and it's been 12 years since I travelled to the Philippines. This time with my husband and kids. Knowing how daunting long-distance travel with children can be, I researched and prepared carefully. The good news? With the right strategies (and the right gear), these journeys can actually become enjoyable for everyone. Here are my best tips to make long-haul travel as smooth as possible.
1. Pact smart
Packing cubes were a lifesaver for keeping our clothes organized throughout the trip. Each family member had their own color-coded set, which made finding outfits for the kids so much easier—and everything stayed neatly in place from start to finish.
2. Keep them entertained
Entertainment is essential on long journeys. While an Ipad can go a long way, don’t forget a good pair of kid-friendly headphones. They not only make the experience more enjoyable for your child but also ensure fellow travelers aren’t disturbed by the sounds of cartoons or games.
3. Snacks = sanity
Hungry kids are cranky kids. Always carry extra snacks—think granola bars, fruit pouches, and reusable water bottles. A collapsible snack container is a game changer to keep things neat and avoid endless rummaging through bags.
4. Comfort first
Dress children in layers, since temperatures fluctuate between airports, planes, and destinations. I bought an inflatable footrest pillow for my youngest and it was a big help for him to sleep better on long-haul flights.
5. Keep important documents handy
Passports, tickets, and health documents should always be in one easy-access travel wallet. A family travel organizer helps avoid last-minute panic at check-in.
6. Manage expectations
Traveling with kids is rarely perfect. Build in extra time for bathroom breaks, airport security, and snack stops. Keep the mood light, and remember: flexibility makes for happier kids (and parents).
